Position Title: (Certified and Non Certified) Tech Assistant
Reports To: Lead Veterinary Technician / Hospital Manager / Veterinarian
Department: Medical Team
Position Summary
The Tech Assistant supports the medical team by providing safe animal handling, assisting with patient care, maintaining a clean and organized hospital, and ensuring supplies are stocked. This role is critical in helping doctors and licensed technicians deliver high-quality medical care and a positive client experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Care & Handling
·Safely restrain and handle patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
·Provide comfort, monitoring, and basic care to patients as directed.
·Walk, feed, and clean up after patients.
·Assist with patient check-in during appointments and with hospitalized patients.
Medical Support (under supervision)
·Prepare exam rooms, treatment areas, and equipment.
·Assist veterinarians and technicians during exams, procedures, and sample collection.
·Perform basic tasks such as holding for blood draws, collecting fecal samples, or helping with diagnostics (as trained).
·Run in-house bloodwork and diagnostic tests as trained.
·Fill prescriptions accurately and safely, when directed and as available.
Client Service
·Greet clients and help with patient check-in and check-out.
·Support positive communication by assisting clients with directions, comfort, or minor education (as directed by the medical team).
Hospital Operations
·Maintain cleanliness of kennels, exam rooms, treatment areas, and common spaces.
·Wash and sterilize equipment and instruments as trained.
·Stock and rotate supplies; notify team leads when items are low.
·Follow infection control, safety, and AAHA standards.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
·Compassion for animals and people, with patience and empathy.
·Ability to handle animals safely and confidently in different situations.
·Strong teamwork; willingness to help wherever needed.
·Basic computer and record-keeping skills.
·Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, including entering coherent and professional statements in patient records.
·Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Education & Experience
·High school diploma or equivalent required.
·Previous animal handling or care experience preferred.
·Veterinary or kennel experience a plus.
Physical Requirements
·Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
·Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs (with assistance available for larger patients).
·Exposure to allergens, zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, radiation, and cleaning chemicals with appropriate PPE provided.
