Lead Veterinary Technician – Job Description

Position Overview

The Lead Veterinary Technician oversees the daily operations of the veterinary technical team, ensuring high-quality patient care, smooth clinic workflow, and excellent client service. This role includes both hands-on technical duties and leadership responsibilities such as training, scheduling, and mentoring team members.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Technical Duties

  • Perform advanced nursing skills including anesthesia induction/monitoring, surgical assistance, dental prophylaxis, radiology, laboratory testing, and emergency triage.

  • Administer medications, treatments, and vaccinations as prescribed by veterinarians.

  • Ensure accurate and thorough medical recordkeeping.

  • Oversee proper handling and restraint of animals for procedures.

  • Monitor patient recovery and provide compassionate care.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Supervise, coach, and mentor veterinary technicians and assistants.

  • Develop training protocols to ensure consistent, high-quality standards of care.

  • Create and manage technician schedules to support clinic efficiency.

  • Support conflict resolution and foster a positive, collaborative work environment.

  • Act as a liaison between the medical team and support staff.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and equipment.

  • Ensure compliance with safety, OSHA, and AAHA/industry standards.

  • Help implement and uphold hospital policies and procedures.

  • Assist management in identifying areas for process improvement.

Qualifications

  • Licensed/Certified/Registered Veterinary Technician (LVT, CVT, RVT) preferred.

  • Minimum 3–5 years of veterinary technician experience; leadership experience preferred.

  • Strong skills in anesthesia, dentistry, laboratory diagnostics, and patient nursing care.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of care.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to lift and restrain animals up to 50 lbs.

  • Standing, walking, and bending for extended periods.

  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
