Lead Veterinary Technician – Job Description
Position Overview
The Lead Veterinary Technician oversees the daily operations of the veterinary technical team, ensuring high-quality patient care, smooth clinic workflow, and excellent client service. This role includes both hands-on technical duties and leadership responsibilities such as training, scheduling, and mentoring team members.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Technical Duties
Perform advanced nursing skills including anesthesia induction/monitoring, surgical assistance, dental prophylaxis, radiology, laboratory testing, and emergency triage.
Administer medications, treatments, and vaccinations as prescribed by veterinarians.
Ensure accurate and thorough medical recordkeeping.
Oversee proper handling and restraint of animals for procedures.
Monitor patient recovery and provide compassionate care.
Leadership & Team Management
Supervise, coach, and mentor veterinary technicians and assistants.
Develop training protocols to ensure consistent, high-quality standards of care.
Create and manage technician schedules to support clinic efficiency.
Support conflict resolution and foster a positive, collaborative work environment.
Act as a liaison between the medical team and support staff.
Operational Responsibilities
Maintain inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
Ensure compliance with safety, OSHA, and AAHA/industry standards.
Help implement and uphold hospital policies and procedures.
Assist management in identifying areas for process improvement.
Qualifications
Licensed/Certified/Registered Veterinary Technician (LVT, CVT, RVT) preferred.
Minimum 3–5 years of veterinary technician experience; leadership experience preferred.
Strong skills in anesthesia, dentistry, laboratory diagnostics, and patient nursing care.
Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of care.
Physical & Work Requirements
Ability to lift and restrain animals up to 50 lbs.
Standing, walking, and bending for extended periods.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
