Position Summary


The Director, Strategic Sourcing – Indirect will play a critical role in developing and executing enterprise sourcing strategies across a broad portfolio of indirect spend categories that support National Veterinary Associates' (NVA) growing network of General Practice, Specialty & Emergency, Pet Resort, and Equine businesses.


Reporting to the Senior Director of Strategic Sourcing, this leader will be responsible for managing and optimizing strategic supplier partnerships across categories including, but not limited to, Information Technology (IT), Group Purchasing Organizations (GPO), Medical Equipment, Pet & Office Supplies and other indirect spend categories ($450M+). The Director will lead enterprise sourcing initiatives, negotiate complex supplier agreements, drive category strategies, and partner closely with business leaders to deliver cost savings, operational efficiencies, supplier innovation, and long-term value.


The ideal candidate is an experienced procurement leader with strong strategic sourcing expertise, category management experience, exceptional stakeholder management skills, and the ability to influence decision-making across a decentralized, multi-site organization.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Sourcing & Category Leadership

  • Develop and execute enterprise sourcing strategies across assigned indirect spend categories to maximize value, reduce total cost of ownership, and support business growth.
  • Lead category strategies for IT, GPO, Medical Equipment, Pet & Office Supplies, Professional Services, Facilities, and other assigned indirect categories.
  • Drive end-to-end strategic sourcing initiatives, including market analysis, RFPs, supplier evaluations, negotiations, contracting, implementation, and supplier performance management.
  • Monitor market trends, supplier capabilities, and emerging technologies to identify opportunities for innovation, risk mitigation, and operational improvement.
  • Develop and maintain multi-year category roadmaps aligned with enterprise priorities.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of 4–6 Strategic Sourcing professionals, fostering a collaborative, high-performing, and customer-focused culture.
  • Set team priorities, allocate resources, and ensure timely execution of sourcing initiatives aligned with business objectives.
  • Drive employee development through coaching, performance management, succession planning, and ongoing professional growth.
  • Promote best practices in strategic sourcing, category management, supplier negotiations, and contract management.
  • Establish performance metrics and KPIs that promote accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Lead change management efforts and support the adoption of new procurement processes, technologies, and organizational initiatives.

Supplier & GPO Relationship Management

  • Serve as the executive relationship manager for strategic suppliers and Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) partners.
  • Negotiate enterprise agreements that optimize pricing, service levels, rebates, contract terms, and supplier performance.
  • Lead supplier business reviews and governance meetings to monitor performance, resolve issues, and identify continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure supplier compliance with contractual obligations, procurement standards, and enterprise policies.
  • Drive supplier performance through strategic partnerships, scorecards, and performance management programs.

Stakeholder Partnership

  • Partner with executive leadership and cross-functional teams, including Operations, Medical Leadership, Information Technology, Finance, Facilities, Legal, and Procurement, to develop sourcing strategies aligned with business objectives.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor by providing category expertise, market intelligence, and strategic sourcing recommendations.
  • Balance enterprise procurement strategies with the operational needs of NVA's decentralized business model.
  • Support acquisition integration by aligning newly acquired hospitals and practices with enterprise sourcing programs.

Financial & Operational Performance

  • Deliver measurable cost savings, cost avoidance, rebate optimization, and operational efficiencies across assigned categories.
  • Analyze supplier spend, contract utilization, rebates, and procurement performance to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Develop executive dashboards and performance metrics to communicate sourcing results, supplier value, and business impact.
  • Increase enterprise contract utilization and compliance with preferred supplier programs.

Procurement Excellence

  • Support the continued evolution of NVA's Procurement Center of Excellence through process standardization, governance, and best practices.
  • Champion procurement transformation initiatives, sourcing technologies, and continuous process improvements.
  • Ensure sourcing activities comply with corporate governance, legal requirements, and procurement policies.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement across the procurement organization.

  • Execute enterprise sourcing strategies that support NVA's growth, operational excellence, and long-term business objectives.
  • Maximize value across strategic supplier partnerships and assigned indirect spend categories.
  • Deliver sustainable cost savings, rebate optimization, supplier innovation, and operational efficiencies.
  • Strengthen strategic partnerships with business leaders, suppliers, and GPO partners.
  • Advance Procurement Center of Excellence initiatives through governance, standardization, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Improve supplier performance, contract compliance, and utilization of enterprise sourcing programs.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or a related field required.
  • MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
  • CPSM, CPSD, or similar professional procurement certification preferred.

Experience

  • 8–12 years of progressive experience in Strategic Sourcing, Procurement, Category Management, or Supply Chain.
  • Proven success developing and executing enterprise sourcing strategies across multiple indirect spend categories.
  • Experience leading complex supplier negotiations, strategic supplier relationships, and enterprise procurement initiatives.
  • Experience working with Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs), healthcare procurement, veterinary organizations, or other multi-site environments preferred.
  • Demonstrated success influencing senior leaders and driving cross-functional initiatives within a matrixed organization.
  • Previous people leadership experience managing and developing procurement or sourcing teams preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Expertise in strategic sourcing, category management, supplier relationship management, and procurement best practices.
  • Strong negotiation, contract management, and commercial acumen.
  • Excellent executive communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical capabilities with experience leveraging spend analytics and supplier performance data to drive business decisions.
  • Experience with procurement technologies such as Coupa, SAP Ariba, Oracle, Jaggaer, or similar platforms.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and reporting tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and lead complex initiatives in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in veterinary healthcare, healthcare systems, medical devices, life sciences, or other highly regulated industries.
  • Knowledge of healthcare contracting, clinical operations, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Experience leading procurement transformation, operational excellence, or continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 15–20% for supplier meetings, business reviews, hospital visits, and strategic planning sessions.
Compensation: 
FLSA Status: Exempt, Salaried
Base Salary: $118,000-195,000
Annual Incentive Plan: 20%
