Veterinary Assistant

The Veterinary Assistant plays an essential role in supporting our entire hospital team. This position works closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, client service representatives, and other team members to provide exceptional care to our patients and clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with patient care and treatments

  • Safely handle and restrain animals for examinations, blood draws, nail trims, and other procedures

  • Monitor hospitalized patients and assist with postoperative care

  • Administer medications under the supervision of a veterinarian or veterinary technician

  • Assist with routine diagnostic testing, including radiographs, bloodwork, and fecal testing

  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments and equipment

  • Clean and disinfect cages, kennels, examination rooms, treatment areas, and other hospital spaces

  • Feed, walk, bathe, and provide general care for hospitalized and boarding animals

  • Maintain, organize, and stock medical supplies and inventory

  • Answer phones and assist with scheduling and client questions

  • Provide friendly, compassionate customer service

  • Help educate and support clients in caring for their pets

  • Communicate effectively with all members of the hospital team

  • Perform other duties as needed to support patient care and hospital operations

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Previous veterinary or animal-care experience is preferred but not required

  • Must be a dependable, motivated self-starter

  • Able to multitask and remain organized in a fast-paced environment

  • Works well as part of a team and communicates respectfully with coworkers and clients

  • Genuinely enjoys working with animals and can remain calm and compassionate when animals are frightened, stressed, ill, or in pain

  • Willing to learn and accept coaching and feedback

  • Committed to providing excellent patient and client care

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds independently

  • Able to assist other team members with lifting animals weighing more than 40 pounds

  • Able to safely restrain animals of varying sizes and temperaments

  • Able to walk or stand for extended periods

  • Able to frequently bend, kneel, reach, and work in a squatting position

  • Comfortable working in an environment that may involve animal hair, odors, bodily fluids, noise, and cleaning chemicals
